President Donald Trump is privately weighing the future of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth after Republicans lost control of both the House and the Senate in Tuesday’s midterms, CBS News reported Wednesday, citing multiple sources familiar with the discussions.
According to CBS, Trump has been asking advisers whether Hegseth should stay in the job or take the blame for the fallout over the war with Iran, which many Republicans blame for the defeat – Vice President JD Vance wrote Wednesday that “the reason we lost is the war,” and Trump himself told Fox News, “I think a part of it was Iran.” Some White House aides also expect scrutiny of CENTCOM commander Adm. Brad Cooper and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine. One source told CBS that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has been floated as a possible successor.
No decision has been made. Publicly, Trump told Fox he does not expect a Cabinet shake-up, and White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said the president “has full confidence in Secretary Hegseth.”
