Election Results: Democrats Win the House and Senate

Democrats have won control of both chambers of Congress in the 2026 midterm elections, ending unified Republican control in Washington for the final two years of President Donald Trump’s second term.

HOUSE: Democrats crossed the 218 seats needed for a majority early Wednesday. As of Wednesday morning, the Associated Press has called 222 House seats for Democrats and 138 for Republicans, with 75 races still uncalled. Democrats also lead the national House popular vote, about 59.1 million to 46.8 million, with about 88% of the expected vote counted. House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries is expected to become Speaker.

SENATE: Democrats flipped at least seven Republican-held seats – North Carolina (Roy Cooper), Texas (James Talarico), Ohio (Sherrod Brown), Iowa, Kansas, South Carolina and Maine (Troy Jackson over Susan Collins) – giving them at least 54 seats. Republicans have 44 seats secured. Two races are still uncalled: Alaska and Mississippi, both Republican-held seats.

Results are unofficial until states certify them. The new Congress takes office January 3, 2027.
